Gloria! Can Design
Block 15 Brewing Company, based in Corvallis, has two popular flagship beers that are distributed throughout the state of Oregon and surrounding region. These flagship beers are well established in the beer world, but they felt the look of the Gloria! can didn’t match the style of beer. The goal was to make it bright and sunny.
“The original Gloria! can was modeled after our other flagship beer, Sticky Hands, for the sake of continuity. Its dark, aggressive look doesn’t vibe with the fun, sunny, happy feel we want for this brand,” from Block 15.
Our approach was to explore the meaning of Gloria! and how the flavors of the beer could be represented graphically. The new design needed to be something that wasn’t a complete departure from the old can. We went through several variations of suns and sun-like elements before landing on the final design.

The Results
A big part of the design process was to evaluate the competition, as well assessing what beers “pop” off the shelf to the consumer. It was noted that the trend of cans were switching to more simplistic designs. This influenced the design but more importance was placed on staying true to the existing Block 15 overall brand.
In addition to the can design, we also needed to address the branding and promotional materials. It was important to maintain a connection with their other flagship beer, Sticky Hands. While the cans would no longer match in aesthetics, we were able to develop a common treatment for both that married the different beers and created a sense of commonality between them.
“Iron Canvas’ refresh of our Gloria! can delivered on our vision for s bright, sunny package for our unfiltered pilsner. Our customers seem to agree, as we’ve seen velocity on that can increase by as much as 2x at some key accounts, as a result of the new design.”
